- Prepare the Syrup:
- Combine sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon stick, and ginger in a saucepan.
- Heat gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Boil for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and chill in the refrigerator.
- Make the Dough:
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Beat the egg and milk together. Gradually add to the dry ingredients, mixing to form a soft dough.
- Roll & Cut:
- Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about ½ inch (1 cm) thick. Cut into strips or doughnut shapes, as desired.
- Fry the Doughnuts:
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the doughnuts in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Drain on paper towels briefly.
- Dip in Syrup:
- While still warm, immediately dunk the doughnuts into the cold syrup. Let them soak for a few seconds before removing them.
- Place on a wire rack to allow excess syrup to drip off.
- Serve & Enjoy:
